The Education Department has started the Mission School of Excellence with the objective of imparting high quality schooling to the students studying in the government schools of Gujarat. In this project, a private institution or individual will provide all kinds of facilities free of cost to help the bright students of government schools in shaping their careers. One lakh students will be prepared by the state government every year under this project.

The government will spend Rs 60,000 on each student
According to this policy, the purpose is to find the most talented students from Std-1 to Std-5 and give them quality education free of cost in the next standards. Sources in the education department said that covering one lakh students a year in the policy would cost the government Rs 60,000 per student, bringing the total cost of the entire project to Rs 600 crore. The selection of project partners will be scrutinized by a committee made up of skilled and experienced individuals. The committee will recommend to the Governing Council, composed of the Secretary of Primary and Secondary Education, for the approval of selected applicants.

At present, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Eklavya Model Residential School and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya are functioning in government residential schools in the state. A large number of applications are received every year for admission in these schools. With this in mind, the Department of Education has developed a world-class Residential School of Excellence policy on the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. According to this policy, free education will be imparted to students from Std. 6 to 12 studying in government schools of the state.

The best teaching method, higher teaching materials and alternative educational medium, which are available in private schools, will be provided in this residential school. Talented students will be sought from these schools and coaching facilities will be provided for them for JEE, NEET as well as Civil Services examinations. According to the state education department, a total of one lakh students from standard 6 to standard 12 will be set up with the capacity of Residential School of Excellence PPP model. To this end, the government has decided to encourage private individuals, organizations, options under corporate social responsibility as well as partners to set up such a school.

The full investment in the project will be made by the partner and the project partners will be given a higher amount per student each year by the education department for recurring expenses. The partner will have to invest in land and all education facilities. The campus of the residential schools will have a capacity of minimum 2 thousand and maximum 10 thousand students. In the future, such campuses could also be developed as educational zones, as stated in the National Education Policy. Academic as well as non-academic staff in these schools will have to be recruited by the project partner on contract basis.

They will contract directly with the employees and pay them salaries as well as allowances. Only the best teacher will have to be appointed in this school. The entire Shiksha-Gujarat School Education Council will be the implementing body for this project. The Governing Council will have academics in addition to higher education officials. The medium of these schools will be Gujarati as well as English. As stated in the order, the students of these schools will be guided in the right direction for a potential career. In addition to competitive examinations, schools will offer study options such as NDA, NID, NEET, Combined Defense Service and Civil Services.
